The Invisible Ground app, in conjunction with an Immersive Historic Marker in Athens, Ohio, offers an augmented reality experience that allows visitors to view current locations overlaid with historical sites. This innovative tool enhances understanding of the area's history by integrating virtual elements into the present-day landscape.
Currently, the app functions at three key sites: across from the former Berry Hotel at 15 N. Court Street, Mount Zion Baptist Church at 32 W. Carpenter Street, and the Athens County Courthouse at 1 S. Court Street. Users can activate specific historical images by locating green circles on the ground near these sites—around the intersection at Mount Zion and the Courthouse—or by pointing their device at the Diner for the Berry Hotel location. Each site also provides audio descriptions to enrich the visitor experience, along with a comprehensive podcast episode related to the location.
